Hi All,

From what I can see, v11 places data files and index files in the

app package. This lead to the following issues

1. How do you upgrade from an older version if you do not want user

to have to open package. I know you can export data in many formats

2. What about permissions, as Usually it is only admin who can

change items in applications

3. What happens if you decide to keep the data file outside of the

application package? Can you do this and leave index files inside.

I know I could figure all of this out but thought if someone else

had already done so, I would take advantage.

There was a bug in v11.1 and .2 betas where if the data file was not

in the application package, it would ask you to select your data file

every time you launched it.  So it appeared that the data file had to

be in the application package.  This was fixed in the released version

of v11.2 (thankfully).  So it's just like it was in previous versions,

it looks to where it last opened the data file from, and only if it's

not there does it ask for the location.

Keeping the data files in the package might be nice for distributing a

catalog that is read only, but as you mentioned in 1 and 2, it can be

problematic.  I also had a problem where I did a small database for a

client using 4D RVL and with the older versions, I had to keep the

data file in the package.  I recently went to upgrade her database,

and threw the old application in the trash, then installed the new

one.  Good thing I didn't empty the trash before I realized that the

data she had been working on entering for a few weeks was in the

trash, inside the app package.  That was close!

I would would this so as not to confuse the customer. You bring up a

valid pint regarding each user. I guess I will have to rethink that

part. I guess I will have to find out how to build a package on mac,

so data file and indices show as one file

I'm curious as to why you would want to keep the index files inside

the app but the data file outside the app. I would think that would

cause the indexes to rebuild if one user logs out and another user

logs in to the same computer. Shouldn't each user have their own

data and index files? (preferably in their home directory)
