In fact, it turned out to be a coding mistake on my part. I forgot to  

put in the DocRef as parameter 1 to SEND PACKET.

I'm wondering why I didn't get a syntax error, rather than the  

strange error message that I did get.

For the record, I have frequently run into the kind of error that  

occurs when the file is still open. That one is pretty specific and  

understandable (can't remember the exact wording).
